Types of Swiss Travel Passes

The Swiss Travel Pass comes in 2 versions - Consecutive and Flex.Both versions offer 1st- and 2nd-class travel and are available in durations of 3, 4, 6, 8, and 15 days.

Both passes also offer a 30% discount to youth travellers aged 16-25. This youth discount, along with the Swiss Family Card, gives a significant price advantage to families.

The Consecutive Day Pass is validated for the chosen number of days from the first date of validity (usage) you enter whilst purchasing the pass.

This pass is most beneficial when you are trying to cram in as much as possible within a short time frame. For example, if you have chosen a 4-day pass and want to travel to different towns almost each day, visit two mountain excursions and one or two museums.

The Flex Pass will also show the first date of validity you enter, but will allow you to use the chosen number of days non-consecutively within a one-month time frame.

This version is more beneficial if you have a more extended stay and plan to hang out in your chosen towns for a few days rather than moving towns almost every day.

You can request the Swiss Family Card when purchasing the Swiss Travel Pass. It is offered free of cost to children under 16 if the parents are Swiss Travel Pass holders. With this, the children can avail themselves of the same vast network of transportation, mountain railways, and museums, totally free.

The Swiss Travel Pass Youth is offered to young travellers aged 16-25 and is an excellent way for them to explore the country at an affordable cost. The Youth Pass is available in both consecutive and flex versions.

How does the Swiss Travel Pass work?

● The pass you receive upon purchase is ready to use.

● You can keep the pass as a downloaded PDF document on your smartphone.

● You can also keep a paper copy (I always carry one just in case I have any issues with my phone).

● The pass has a QR code that train staff can scan for recordkeeping purposes.

● Just hop on the train or tram required and show the pass to the ticket checker upon request

The validity period of the Swiss Travel Pass is measured in calendar days. The last day of the pass ends at 5 am the following morning, allowing you to do any late-night journey you may need.

The time that you start your journey does not matter. So, for example, if you have purchased a 3-day pass starting 1st October, the pass is valid for travel on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd October and will end at 5 am on 4th October.

How does the Swiss Travel Pass Flex Work:

Upon purchasing the Swiss Travel Pass Flex, you receive a purchase receipt showing the number of days you selected and the dates it is valid.

The QR code you receive will help you get tickets for each date you want to travel on within that time frame.

How to Activate the Swiss Travel Pass Flex:

When you scan the QR code on your receipt, you will be directed to the site https://activateyourpass.com .

You will see the relevant calendar dates here and can activate days as needed. Once you activate the day, you get an e-ticket for that day, which you can download to your phone and show to the ticket checker.

You can also cancel a travel day up to the day before the chosen one.

The validity period of the Swiss Travel Pass Flex is also measured in calendar days. You can use a day ticket until 5 am the following day.

Note: Keep in mind that you will not receive any benefit for travel, mountains, museums, family card, etc., on days that are not validated. This means that if you are staying in a town and need to travel, even for a short local bus or tram ride, you will have to purchase a full-fare ticket on those days.

When is the Swiss Travel Pass totally worth it?

Now, this is subjective and can be viewed from the perspective of cost and convenience. It may not be a great money-saver in many itineraries, but the simplicity and convenience the pass offers make it totally worth its price.

However, I do understand that if you are looking to get the best bang for your buck and are willing to do the math for it, then you will probably see that the Swiss Travel Pass will be a winner, especially when -

- You have a short stay and are going from city to city almost every day

- You are visiting multiple mountains, like Mount Titlis, Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, and Mount Pilatus, during your stay.

- When you want to visit a few museums and attractions like the Chillon Castle or the Swiss Museum of Transport.

- And most certainly, when you have planned for journeys on Switzerland’s renowned panoramic trains like the Glacier Express and Bernina Express. Even though you have to pay for reservations on these trains, the train journeys themselves are totally covered on the pass.
